Here is page one of a four-page article by Frederick Westing entitled "Birth Of The Broadway." It was published originally in the March 1952 issue of "Trains" magazine, page 52. Photo Caption: "In this period photo of 1906, E-3a class Atlantic type No. 374 slips the Pennsylvania Special through the interlocking plant at Zoo Tower at West Philadelphia. Only five wooden cars made up the Special's consist in a day when train length had to be short for speed." Prominent here is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #374, an E-3A (4-4-2) "Atlantic" built in Juniata during 1905 and retired in March of 1932 after 27 years of faithful service. |
